Expelled Heliodorus from the Temple, Gerard de Lairesse , 1674
  • Seleucus IV , who is struggling with financial problems related to debt to pay to the Romans since the Peace of Apamea support his prime minister Heliodorus to inspect and confiscate the treasure of the temple of Jerusalem. The high priest Onias III refuses this request (the treasure included not only the deposits of the people but also the fortune of Tobias Hyrcanus ). After his failure in Jerusalem, Heliodorus poisoned Seleucus to Antioch and tries to get himself declared king but he was overthrown and executed by Antiochus IV , brother of Seleucus IV.
  • The high priest Jason (Yeshua) receives approval of Antiochus IV to transform Jerusalem into a Greek city in return for large sums of money. Jerusalem is the name of Antioch. Jason makes a list of members of the demos (people) and wants to establish educational institutions like Greece. The construction of a gymnasium at the foot of the hill of Zion cause unrest among the Jews. Antiochus IV profane the temple blood sacrifices and installed the statue of Zeus. It prohibits the circumcision and the Sabbath.
