Summary

/ / History

The Romans built a bridge across the Rhine to the year 10 BC. AD in the territory Eburon , near a place called Bonna Bonn, Federal Capital

The headquarters of the Federal Chancellery from 1976 to 1999, now occupied the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation.

When in July 1948 the Western allies of Trizone decided to give the West German democratic political structures, the question of the city to host the parliamentary constituents arose quickly, Berlin because of his four-power status and its landlocked situation therefore unable to effectively fulfill this mission.
Kassel , Stuttgart , Frankfurt am Main and Bonn were then approached the four cities to become the host of parliamentary proceedings.

The Villa Hammerschmidt , seat Federal President from 1949 to 1994, which is currently the second residence of the Head of State

Cassel, too close to the Soviet occupation zone , withdrew his candidacy.
Stuttgart, whose finances were not great, was not accepted.
Only Frankfurt am Main and Bonn remained candidates.
If the past prestigious Frankfurt, located Zone American occupation , could make a difference in Bonn had cons for the British , since the city was within their own area.
Even the German parties were divided on the question: Frankfurt had the support of the SPD , while Bonn was receiving support from the coalition CDU / CSU.
The Interior Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, Walter Menzel , proposed that the preparatory work of the first meeting held in the birthplace of Beethoven. This is the strength of persuasion of Konrad Adenauer , then mayor of Cologne , a town near Bonn, which will remove with his colleagues the final decision in favor of the latter, even if we tried until the last moments of alternatives to Karlsruhe or Celle.

The Schaumburg Palace , headquarters of the Federal Chancellery from 1949 to 1976.

The three main official reasons for this choice were:

  1. the shortage of offices and homes of a devastated city such as Frankfurt (compared Bonn had suffered less destruction), would have caused structural problems if the city had subsequently been designated as "provisional capital."
  2. the installation of the new democratic Germany in Frankfurt could cause problems of independence of the by the fact that the city also housed the headquarters of U.S. military forces in Germany.
  3. that Belgium agreed to evacuate Bonn which was part of the Belgian zone of occupation, the Germans claiming the right to sit out the presence of an army belonging to the victors, for want to see the new power of the German tainted suspiscion not be able to freely represent the new Germany.

Thus the 1September 1948 to 14 August 1949 , the city hosted the Parliamentary Council in charge of drafting the Basic Law of the future Federal Republic of Germany.

Following the elections on 1 German Bundestag in 1949 in Bonn will be designated as temporary capital of the Federal Republic between 1949 and 1990.

Following the German reunification , Berlin regained its status as capital of a reunited Germany, and most of the political institutions were brought to relocate.

However, for financial rather than political reasons (the federalism in particular), many ministries, embassies and other political institutions remained in Bonn is now the only German city to have achieved a status of "Federal City" (Bundesstadt).

The Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universitt (Bonn University) is one of the most prestigious in Germany. It is the largest employer in the city.
