History

The Round Church of sterlars

In medieval Icelandic sources, the island of Bornholm is named Burgundarholm. Alfred the Great appointed her, him, Burgundians Land. It is from these names as some researchers put the island homeland of the Burgundians. The island is most certainly a land of ancient farmers and herders. Fishing for salmon, cod and herring is then performed on a seasonal basis.

The island was originally part of the Danish States when it unified. Attached to the Scania , it has been administered by Skne Act after it has been codified in the thirteenth century.

Control of the island is the subject of a long rivalry between the Danish krone and the archbishop of Lund , who engaged several battles to get there. The first fortress on the island was Gamleborg is the old fortress. She was soon replaced by Lilleborg or small fortress built by King in 1150. A year ago, the king had accepted the transfer of three of the four subdivisions of the island to the archbishopric of Lund.

In 1250 , Archbishop built his own fortress, Hammershus. From this, he launched in 1259 , a campaign to conquer the rest of Bornholm, including Lilleborg which was destroyed. The island's status remains subject to dispute for another two centuries, while Hansa takes control of economic. It was not until 1522 that the island continues to be under the dominion of the Archbishop of Lund.

In 1525 , the island is pledged to the Hanseatic city of Lbeck for fifty years to offset the debts of the Danish crown. The residents were then subjected to heavy taxes and forced labor. However, a revolt broke out in 1535 and the island was once again a Danish fief, administered by a lord.

In the seventeenth century , the island was occupied several times. The Sweden conquered the island in 1645 including, but had to make in Denmark during the treaty of peace that followed. However, in 1658 when the Treaty of Roskilde , Bornholm was ceded to Sweden when Denmark was forced to abandon its eastern provinces ( Skneland , Trondelag ). The same year, a revolt broke out and the Swedish commander was assassinated. The people then gave their island as a gift to the Danish King Frederick III , provided that it never sells the island to another in exchange for power and many privileges. The Treaty of Copenhagen was signed in this direction in 1660 and Sweden visited the island to the Danes.

During the nineteenth century , the island of Bornholm with a little urban and industrial growth controlled by Necks Rnne and attracts a large migration of Swedish Skne and Smland in search of better working conditions. While most returned later in Sweden, some stayed.

Geography

Bornholm.

The island of Bornholm in the shape of a parallelogram 40 km from north to south, 30 km from east to west and a circumference of 141.4 km. The interior reveals a world of hills culminating located at 162 m altitude. They allow grain crops, including wheat and oats and an intense beef and pork. The kaolin deposits allow the manufacture of ceramics and pottery.

She has the distinction of being the only island in Denmark to present a rocky whose glaciers could not overcome the Quaternary. The steep cliffs and rocky northern coast are spectacular as well. The southern coast, much flatter and often sandy, offers the tourist beaches of fine sand which was formerly used in the manufacture of hourglasses.

Its charm perfect for hiking biking is also an architectural original (several magnificent churches round). These advantages allow the homeland of Burgundy (they were gone at the end of the Roman Empire to settle in Burgundy ) to offer a popular destination for lovers of tranquility and history. The configuration of low relief promotes the formation of snow drifts in some rare snowy winters. They have exceeded six feet high, blocking all road transport after heavy snowfall in mid-December 2010.

These municipalities were created in April 1970 , by pooling 22 municipalities (incorporated by 6 market towns and 16 parishes).
