Brandenburg (in German Sorbian is one of the Federated States composing the German. It completely surrounds the city-state of Berlin and is centrally located in the former German Democratic Republic. The name is derived from the city of Brandenburg-Havel-sur-la where was the seat of power at the time of the establishment of the Mark Brandenburg. With a population density of 86 inhabitants per square km, Brandenburg is the Land of the least populated German after that of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. There are the poorest regions of Germany, some regions with an average income lower than the Czech Republic. On the other hand, thanks to its history Prussian is one of the German states with the best in cultural landscapes.

The Land of Brandenburg, from the old Province of Brandenburg , was created for the first time in 1947 , upon dissolution of the Free State of Prussia , and only lasted six years. Like all East German Lnder in the German Democratic Republic (GDR), it was dissolved in turn in 1952 and replaced by three districts (Bezirke), administrative units in the GDR district of Cottbus , Frankfurt district-l Oder and Potsdam district. During the German reunification , the state of Brandenburg was reconstituted in 1990 from German territory of the Prussian province of Brandenburg , which corresponded to the March of Brandenburg (Mark Brandenburg) west of the Oder. The territory of the March of Brandenburg east of the Oder, called New Start (Neumark), is part of the territory Poland since 1945. The Old Walking (Altmark), which formerly formed part of the March of Brandenburg and the Prussian Saxony , is part of the Land of Saxony-Anhalt today.

Geography

Among the Lnder of the former East Germany , Brandenburg is the largest with about 30,000 sq. km. To the east it borders on Poland and shares the Oder and Neisse rivers as borders. The neighboring states are the Land of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in the north, the Land of Saxony-Anhalt in the west and the Land of Saxony to the south. The city-state of Berlin is located in the center is part of Brandenburg. The largest cities (by population) are Potsdam , Brandenburg's capital and seat of government and thus the Landtag , Cottbus , Brandenburg-sur-la-Havel and Frankfurt / Oder. Eberswalde , Neuruppin , Schwedt and Eisenhttenstadt are also important cities.

Only the Havel and Spree rivers are important for the region. The largest lakes in Brandenburg are Schwielochsee (13.3 km ), the Scharmtzelsee (12.0 km ), the Unteruckersee (10.4 km ) and Parsteiner See (10.0 km ).

Climate

Brandenburg is the climate of qualified high oceanic gradient continental influence, with strong seasonal. The average annual temperature is 8.7 C, the coldest month is January with an average temperature of -1.1 C, the warmest month is July with an average temperature of 18.4 C.

The average annual rainfall is less than 600 mm, making it one of the Brandenburg Lnder driest. The region of the Oderbruch on the banks of the Oder , and is one of the driest regions of the whole of Germany, with an average rainfall of less than 500 mm. Though most rainfall occurs in summer and winter months and spring are rather dry, the risk of forest fire are quite high in summer because of long dry periods between the occurrences of heavy rainfall.

The average duration of sunshine is 1600 hours.

Flora and fauna

Extensive pine forests and the moors , which often develop in areas formerly used by Soviet armies in East Germany are typical of the flora of Brandenburg, where the soil is mostly sandy.

Cultural life is not confined to major cities of Brandenburg, but also manifests itself strongly in the various festivals are well distributed throughout the land. Politics

Landtag Brandenburg

The seat of the Landtag (regional parliament) is Potsdam.

Since German reunification , the state has known only two presidents Minister , from the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD). The first, Manfred Stolpe , led the government of 1990 to 2002 , at the head of three governments, including a clear majority.

The current Minister-President is, since 26 June 2002 , Matthias Platzeck. Until 6 November 2009 , he was supported by a grand coalition with the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU). Since then, he heads a government formed by a red-red coalition with Die Linke.

In addition, 1990 to 1994 , Brandenburg was the first Land to experience a traffic light coalition , comprising the SPD, Alliance 90/The Greens and the Liberal Democratic Party (FDP).
