The industry, which developed in the nineteenth century (coal Montceau-les-Mines , the Creusot Steel, Mining Machine), has gained fresh momentum after 1945, particularly in the valley of the Saone River (Macon , Chalon-sur-Saone), and Dijon in Burgundy, but has not been spared by the crisis. Among the international companies in Burgundy can be cited Amora Maille (group Unilever ), with plants of Appoigny (Burgundy) and Dijon (Cte-d'Or) closed in late August 2009, the pharmaceutical URGO at Dijon , the Factory Fulmen, largest employer of Auxerre (closed factory), the Laboratoires Vendme (Little Marseille ...) to Quetigny ( Community Grand Dijon ) and the factory history of SEB to Selongey.

In contrast, the northern region, low in large companies, has benefited from the establishment of industries lighter, more diversified specialty chemicals, pharmaceuticals, electronics, plastics, paper, automotive and engineering industries, food processing.

Finally, tourism with gastronomy, history, culture and tourism with the wealth of recreational adventure based in the villages in the valley of the Armanon and the regional park of Morvan provide the region's largest additional resources.

Trade and services are important in Burgundy ( Avallon is the seat of the distribution group Schiever ). For example, is classified Dijon city where businesses are more competitive in France Demographics

The settlement of Burgundy is sparsely and unevenly distributed. The population is concentrated on the lines of communication so that the Morvan is empty. Burgundy is currently less populated than it was in 1851. The region had 1,624,000 inhabitants in 2006.

Since 1990, the demographic imbalance has widened between Burgundy and the dominant regions that flank (Ile-de-France and Rhne-Alpes). On both strong growth, Burgundy offers only stagnation. The annual net migration only increased from -0.03% to -0.04% between the last two censuses, but the annual natural increase fell from 0.13 to 0.04%. This reflects an aging population, the region attracts a more retirees than younger households.

Only Dijon and its surroundings are spared from the game
