Castletown in Manx) is a town and a district south of the Isle of Man , in the parish of Malew. According to the census of 2001 , the population of Castletown is 3100 inhabitants. It was for centuries the capital of the Isle of Man, before it is transferred to Douglas Geography

This city, ancient capital of the island has emerged around 1090 and is thus one of the oldest cities in the British Isles. It is situated on the site of an ancient volcano . She has a remarkable castle, Castle Rushen (which gives the town its name), who hosted the family for centuries the lords (including the family of Derby ) and, before them, Kings Viking Island .

Castletown is also a "House of Keys constituency, electing one member of the House of Keys.

The most remarkable buildings of the city are the Castle Rushen Castle , recently restored , King William's College, The Old Grammar School and the House of Keys. The Tynwald sitting once in Castletown, except at the Tynwald Day , the day of Manx National Day, where he sat on Tynwald Hill in St. John's.

The interest lies mainly in its Castletown period buildings. Many buildings are made of local stone, consisting of lime silver-gray. The structure of the central streets of the town remained very close to the historic Castletown. A market is held.

King William's College and the Airport Ronaldsway flank the north-east of the city. To the northwest lies the Castletown Castle Rushen High School. To the north is the village of Ballasalla , north-west of the village Ballabeg and West, Port St. Mary and Port Erin. The town of Castletown has a railway station operated by the local company, the Isle of Man Steam Railway.

The old school building is also interesting, as Peggy Boat Museum. The Peggy is an old boat which was assembled in a building belonging to the family Quayle and forgotten for about a century before being rediscovered by workmen. Dan Quayle , former Vice-President of the United States , is also linked to the Quayle family of the Isle of Man.
