Origin

Derivative of the weasel word itself comes from the Greek khartes, sheet and Latin Chart / Carte, the term "charter" appears to the XIII century. Flowering charters between the eleventh century and the fourteenth century , is linked to the development of the uses of writing, legal institutions and human rights messages.

The Charter is thus the ultimate legal text of the Old Regime.

Founded by Louis XVIII , the Ecole Nationale des Chartes is the French public institution of higher education for the study of these acts, and forms the scientific staff of archives and libraries.

The British constitutional charters

The Magna Carta (Magna Carta), which is the foundation of English liberties, was signed in 1215 by John Lackland and confirmed in 1264 by his son Henry III.
