The Cathedral of St German, on the island of St. Patrick , head of the Diocese of Sodor and Man.

Sodor and Man is a diocese of the Church of England. Originally much larger, the diocese now covers the Isle of Man and the adjacent islets.

Summary

/ / History

The diocese Norwegian of Sodor was formed in 1154. He then covered the Hebrides and other islands of the west coast of Scotland. His name Norse was Sreyjar or Sudreys ("southern islands"), as opposed to Norreyjar, the "northern islands" that are the Orkney and Shetland. The Isle of Man was included in these southern islands. This diocese was part of the archdiocese of Trondheim.

Norway controls these islands until 1266 , when she yielded to Scotland ( Treaty of Perth ). The Isle of Man was detached and Islands of Scotland came under the suzerainty of the kings of England in 1334. Subsequently, the diocese spent the lords of Man (the Stanleys, earls of Derby , from 1406 to 1736 and the Dukes of Atholl from 1736) until the manor was bought by the British Crown in 1765. The right to appoint the Bishop of Sodor and Man belonged to the lords of Man, then it was exercised by the dukes of Atholl, before being handed to the Crown in 1828.

It seems that the origin of the name Sodor has been lost. It is likely that this term meant the island which housed the headquarters of the bishop. Termination "and Man" appears to have been added to the seventeenth century. Until 1604 , bishops invariably signed "Sodorensis", then until 1684 , they used sometimes as "Soderensis" sometimes the English form of Sodor and Man. Since 1684, they invariably sign "Sodor and Man."

The Cathedral of the Diocese of Sodor and Man was originally on the island of St. Patrick , in Peel , the only city of Man. During the eighteenth century , it gradually fell into disuse and, for several years, there was a pro-cathedral in Douglas. In 1980 the present cathedral of the Diocese of Sodor and Man, the parish church of Saint-germanic Peel, was designated by Act of Tynwald.
