Douglas in Manx ) is the capital of the Isle of Man. The city had 25,347 inhabitants in the 2001 census (26,218 in Census 2006).

Douglas is situated on the eastern coast of the island at the confluence of two rivers, the Dhoo and Glass, which forms the river Dhoo-Glass. In Douglas, the rivers meet and flow into the Bay of Douglas.

The city is surrounded by small towns and villages including Onchan , north (which forms a conurbation with Douglas), and Union Mills to the west.

On 20 October 2007 , Douglas was ranked first in a list of coastal towns of the British Isles , "built along a large bay door of the fascinating Isle of Man .

Place names

The name Douglas (Manx Doolish) comes from Dhoo and Glass , the two rivers that surround the resort. A recent hypothesis, however, tends to show that the name "Douglas" actually comes from the root Celtic duboglassio ("clear water"). This root is found in the names of several places of the British Isles : Ynys Dulas in Wales and Dawlish in England in particular.

History

The city of Douglas owes its initial development to its natural harbor (today's Inner Harbor, Inner Harbour), which has greatly expanded and improved. The famous Running Trade ( smuggling ) of 1670 to 1765 , gave a real boost to the economy of the city. Other periods of development have brought prosperity to Douglas: the low cost of living and a favorable status enjoyed over English debtors. Later in the year 1870 , the city became a popular tourist destination.

Douglas is the capital of the Isle of Man since 1863 , an honor previously held by Castletown , a smaller town located south of the island.

The Tynwald , the Manx Parliament, based in Douglas, except at the Tynwald Day , National Day of the island, where there headquarters in St. John's , a small village west of Man.

During the First and Second World War , Douglas and other parts of the island served as a camp imprisonment for "enemy aliens".

On 2 August 1973, the city was under the Disaster of Summerland , in which 51 people were killed.

In 2011 , Douglas has to organize the Youth Games Commonwealth.

According to the census of 2006 , Douglas has 26 218 inhabitants, representing about one third of the total population of the Isle of Man.

The Tower of Refuge

Around 1824 , Sir William Hillary (an Englishman installed on the Isle of Man in 1808 ), designed the project to create an institution that allows the rescue of Manx sailors in the Irish Sea , a sea particularly hostile. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) is created.

Designed by John Welch, the Tower of Refuge (Tower of Refuge) is completed in 1832. It is situated on the rock of Conister (also called rock of Sainte-Marie), in Douglas Bay, and has the appearance of a small medieval castle in granite. Sir Hillary financed much of the work, completed while a public subscription to raise the remaining sum needed. This tower is designed to provide shelter in inclement weather and / or heavy seas. It contains a constant supply of bread and water fresh. It is owned by the RNLI whose flag flies atop the main tower.

Renovations were completed in 2006 and 2007 , consisting of repairing walls and replacing damaged blocks. Night lighting has been provided and is operational since 2010 .

The Theater of Mirth

This theater opened in 1893 , but shortly after it closes to be completely rethought. The architect Victorian Frank Matcham was responsible for the design. The theater reopened in 1900 and enjoyed great success until the First World War that causes a drop in attendance.

From 1950 , he served as a cinema, and is proposed for demolition in 1968. It was bought by the government of the Isle of Man in 1971 and began restoration in 1976.

The Manx Museum

The Manx Museum ("Museum Manx" in French), whose visit is free, opens its doors on November 2 1922. It was created following the Museum and Ancient Monuments Trustees, opened in 1886 on a deed of Tynwald , the Manx Parliament. The Manx Museum houses the offices of the Manx National Heritage , a government institution for the preservation of the heritage of the Isle of Man.

During the inauguration of 1922, Sir William Fry , Lieutenant Governor of the island, said: "Some will find this small museum. All the museums modest beginnings, but there is no reason why this museum does not flourish. We have the land for expansion, and plans are ready for the day when we will have to enlarge ... It has always been in the minds of the directors (the museum) should be an educational center for the island ... "

It was in 1986 , to celebrate the centenary of the first museum of the island, the Manx Museum is enlarged. It now hosts, in addition to home theaters, a gallery devoted to the archaeological prehistoric.
