False Friends In English
The false friends in English (false cognates) are words of the English language that recall others in the French language but it should not be confused with them. Their existence is rarely due to chance, an etymology or common cross-channel loans are usually the reason. The false friends are also doubly treacherous if you know it is their primary sense which differs between English and French, because these words often have meanings common secondary (this is called partial false friends in English semi-false cognates). For example, the word "lease" in English means "place" or "position", but the full English dictionaries add that this word can also mean "lease," which is precisely the fact synonymous to rent something (the rent).
