The flag of the Isle of Man , called in Manx , French "three feet" is a triquetra (a variety of triskele ) in armor , meaning in dextral and background Gules (red).
Summary |
In the thirteenth century , the king of the Isle of Man , Magnus III , whose possessions extended north to the Hebrides (islands west of Scotland ), adopts for unknown reasons the trisqutre on a red background as its symbol on arms. In 1266 , when the Isle of Man briefly under the sovereignty Scottish and permanently under the Crown English , these arms are held and will serve to create a flag.
The flag was then banned in 1935 and only allowed on the island is the Lieutenant-Governor of Man. Finally, the ban is lifted July 8, 1968 and the flag was officially restored on 27 August 1971.
It can be used without restriction, including vessels registered in the archipelago (formerly it was only a house and land not sea). It remains a symbol of peace, civil or governmental, but not a symbol of war since the Isle of Man does not defend itself outside (provided by the United Kingdom which features the Union Jack ).
Heraldic Symbolism triquetra
The reasons for the adoption of the triquetra to symbolize the royal arms of the ancient Kingdom of Man are not widely known, but it was also used and seen as equivalent to the pagan symbol of sun , the seat of life and power.
This symbol also appears related to the island of Sicily because of its shape with three legs, however the symbol showing the head of the Sicilian Medusa in the center (one of the three Gorgons in Greek mythology , the only one fatal) and were normally bare legs in the Sicilian version. In the Manx triquetra, the three legs are here dressed in armor and headless.
Others see a relationship with a symbol heraldic popular among peoples Celtic and Norse in the north-west Europe, the triskell , which have been modified as clearer sign of power applied to new conquests. This is suggested by the discoveries of ancient coins minted by King Norse Anlaf Cuaran the tenth century , whose range has expanded to cover a part of Ireland to Dublin and the Isle of Man it himself, these coins showing a simplified version of this symbol. However, this may remain an ad hoc creation designed to merge two symbols actually quite similar in appearance, and this hypothesis does not exclude a Sicilian origin.
The triquetra (or triskell ), was originally to be represented either in the direction of rotation dextral or sinistral in the direction. However, a royal decree in 1968 set the dextral sense as the only valid. The flag of the Isle of Man is so built duplex so that the sense of dextral triquetra is respected on both sides.
Civil Flag
The civil flag was abolished in 1935 but restored September 18, 1971. Adding the Union Jack, the flag became a sign civil, but an exclusively marine. This sign is not approved as a symbol of State of Man remains the single flag of mouth.
In contrast, the Lieutenant-Governor, who is the personal representative of the British sovereign, has a flag based on the British Union Jack where the flag of Man is only added in the center to designate its mission. This flag is reserved for him and is not used otherwise than in his presence at Man.
Parliamentary Flag
In these flags is added that of the Tynwald (Parliament of Man) which is a Norse galley gold (not a longship Viking with which it is often confused) with flight crew by the force of the sail deployed (without trains), on azure.
This flag, also sometimes referred to as the "flag MacDonald, was first suggested by Roy MacDonald , then MHK for the city of Peel , according to the heraldic symbol used on some parts Manx, and now also a stained glass the windows of the chamber of Tynwald.
After consideration by a committee of Tynwald, who acknowledged that the symbol of the galley would be appropriate to make a flag of truce, the flag was first raised in 1971 on the mat towards the procession to Tynwald Hill the day Tynwald Day, and outside the legislative building in Douglas.
