Flemish (Dialect)

The term "Flemish" means a group of dialects of Dutch. Strictly speaking, this may be the Western Flemish or Flemish East. Dialects spoken in Flanders

The Flemish, in the broadest sense and in terms of language, a denominator of any dialect spoken somewhere on the territory of the former County of Flanders. This extends from the southern Netherlands ( New Zealand ) in northern France. From west to east, there are many local varieties, the most common is probably the West Flemish , which is spoken by more than one million people in the far west of Belgium. Some attempts have been marginal businesses to establish it as a language 'Catholic' in its own right based on the literature of Guido Gezelle , but they were never successful.

Flemish western France, however, was codified in the work of Jean Louis Marteel Het Vlaams oudders klappen dan men. " It has an own grammar and a dictionary: Fagoo, Sansen and Simon published in 1985.

It is not and has never been the official language of the Flemings in Belgium , a role reserved for the Dutch , whose use and rules are based on an agreement ( Nederlandse Taalunie ) with the Netherlands and Suriname.

However, the Flemish word usage has remained relatively common in Belgium to refer (incorrectly) the Netherlands.

There are at least since the sixteenth century dictionaries and grammars "proto-Dutch" or "proto-Flemish, the dialect spoken in the Flemish medieval and who were the predecessors of the Netherlands today. Different authors use the terms vlaems (and its variants) or to designate it nederlands. In French , because there were also bilingual dictionaries and lexicons, it gave "Flemish" or " town of Thionville. The word "Dutch" appears only very late in the nineteenth century.

There has never been in space Dutch cultural center strong enough to impose its language as a single standard for the difference, for example, to Paris for the domain French. Nevertheless, the Dutch standard ( Ausbau language ) is mainly based on the dialects of Holland.

Today, many Flemings speak a dialect called tussentaal, literally "language between the two (between the local dialect and standard Dutch).
