Fricative Consonant

In phonetics , a fricative consonant, or for brevity fricative is a consonant produced by a moderate approximation of phonation organs that will not happen until the noise characteristic of friction of fricatives. They can be subdivided into semi-consonants and liquids , and are almost always voiced.

In an earlier stage of phonetic terminology, the distinction was not made between turns and fricatives, and the two were working terms interchangeably.

The turns are sometimes called approximants, a term indicating a good approximation of the organs of phonation short of constriction.
