Frisian ^Today

Today, it is generally understood Friesland region stretching from northern Netherlands and north-western Germany ( Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein ). Its inhabitants were Frisians and the language Frisian. This region consists of several parts:

• the West Friesland and the province of Friesland in the Netherlands;
• the East Friesland is a region in northern Germany, east of the Netherlands , which was a confederation of independent republics in the Middle Ages, then a principality;
• the North Friesland in northern Germany ( Schleswig-Holstein ) south of Denmark.

The Frisian Islands Frisian Islands are one or archipelago stretching north coast of the Netherlands south of Denmark and includes the divisions of Friesland background:

• Frisian Islands West ;
• islands in the East Frisian ;
• North Frisian Islands.

Apart from the province of Friesland (Netherlands), Friesland is the name used to refer to several political and administrative entities present:

• The West Frisian (West-Friesland), a region of the province of North Holland in the north-west of the Netherlands;
• The district of Frisia (Friesland), in north-west of the Land of Lower Saxony (Germany);
• The district of North Friesland (Nordfriesland) in north-west of the Land Schleswig-Holstein.

History

The Frisians settled in Friesland around the ^fifth century BC. AD. For ^seventh and ^eighth centuries , the peoples chronologies francs mention this sector as the kingdom of Frisians. However, this was probably not the Frisians of Roman times.

In Middle Ages the term Friesland or strips meant a much larger area than the current Friesland, which included all the coastal regions since the Weser to Sinkfal .

Friesland was submitted by the Franks in the late ^seventh century. Pepin II defeated in 689 King Radbod and had conquered the country until Vlie ; this region, a moment snatched from the Franks, had been retaken by Charles Martel , who had postponed until Lauwers Poppon, successor Radbod ( 734 , Battle of Boarn). All the territory Frisian Eastern Lauwers was therefore incorporated into the kingdom. During the reign of Pepin the Short , the Lauwers still draw the line between the Frisians Christians and idolaters Frisians. Beyond this were the expeditions of Charlemagne in Saxony who assured the Frankish rule ( 785 , defeat Widukind ).

The law of the Frisians ( ^eighth century ) divides the frieze West Friesland (in the Sinkfal Vlie , emissary of Zuiderzee ), Friesland average (Vlie of the Lauwers , west of Groningen ) and East Friesland (the Lauwers to the Weser ) .

In West Friesland, one can detail the pagi following:

• Maritima ( Zealand and Four-Trades );
• Masala Marsum or the mouths of the Meuse ;
• Huitingoe , between the Meuse and the Merwede ;
• Hollant between the Merwede and the Lek ;
• Lake and Isla , between the Lek and the IJssel ;
• Rinland between the Lek and Rhine ;
• Germepi on the Rhine, west of Utrecht ;
• Instarlaka on both sides and west of the Vecht ;
• Kinnem , the southern part of North Holland ;
• Texla , originally comprising the island of Texel and more northern North Holland, the latter portion is referred to the ^tenth and ^eleventh century under the name Comitatus Werterling .

Friesland average included the Westergo and Ostergo , corresponding roughly to the present province of Friesland .

East Friesland was divided into a series of small pagi, namely: to the west of the Ems , Humerki , Hunesga , Fivelgo , Emisga , east of the Ems ( Ostfriesland present) Federgewe , Asterga , nordend , Riustri , etc. .

Reginon reports that in 809 , King of Denmark Godfrey sent a message to the Duke who ruled Frisia, he did not name, and we do not know what organization Charlemagne had given to the whole country .

• The Hattuarie between the Meuse and the Rhine, north of Moille ( Geldern ) .

Norman Godfrey was murdered in 884 by Count Saxon Eberhard on the orders of Charles the Fat. It probably took off when the Frieze of Lorraine in 885 , when he created Duke Eberhard. Eberhard, was in turn killed by Waldger son of Gerulf ( 898 ) Arnulf of Carinthia as his successor his brother Meginhard .

In ^the tenth century , we find no trace of the duchy, and its ephemeral existence due to the need where kings were seen to protect the coast always exposed to attacks by hackers Scandinavian .

There were many floods in the ^eleventh and ^twelfth centuries , which later formed the Zuiderzee.
