Gaelic languages are a family of Celtic languages , distinct group of the Brythonic languages. They include:

• the Irish (and the Old Irish )
• the Scottish ,
• the Manx dialect of the Isle of Man.

The Gaelic name commonly refers all these languages.

Sometimes seen mention Shelta Gaelic as a language, which is a misnomer: although lexically, the language approaches the Irish, it is grammatically and syntactically, a Germanic language (akin to English ). It can therefore be classified as a Germanic language, with strong input lexical Gaelic.

Current Status

Irish Gaelic is mostly spoken in the Gaeltacht on the west coast of Ireland : it is the first national language of the country where his appreciation is the subject of a political struggle against the dominant use of English ( a second national language under the Constitution). An estimated 300,000 Irish people have mastered the language, but the number of speakers who speak on a daily basis is probably lower.

In some remote provinces of Scotland as the Isle of Skye , there are still villages where the inhabitants only speak Gaelic. In Scotland , even in schools where there is teaching exclusively in Gaelic were created. Gaelic is spoken today by 2% of Scots.

In Canada , only the Scottish Highlands and the Welsh have founded communities where their language has survived until the late twentieth ^century. There are Scottish Gaelic communities on the island of Cape Breton and in three counties of eastern Nova Scotia ( Guysborough , Pictou and Antigonish ), at the Prince Edward Island Prince Edward Island , in the Valley Codroy in south-western Newfoundland , in Compton County in Quebec, in Southern Ontario (the counties of Stormont , of Dundas and Glengarry southeast of Ottawa , and the County of middlesex west London) and on both sides of the border between Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

In the early ^twentieth century , Cregneash (or Creneash in Manx) was the center of the community mannophone until the end of the older generation of speakers. Today, new speakers are scattered across Isle of Man, being 2.2% of the total population. A native Gaelic calling Bunscoill Gaelgagh (lit.: "Kindergarten Gaelic) was created, supported financially by the cultural organization Mooinjer Veggey (lit.:" Little people "or" Little People ").
