Likely evolution of the grapheme

The Semitic letter (kh and) probably represented the deaf pharyngeal fricative / /. The shape of the character is probably a close. The H of the Greek alphabet was the original silent glottal fricative / h / , but later became the letter eta (, ), a long vowel, / /. In Modern Greek this phoneme has merged with / i /.

The Etruscan and Latin had the phoneme / h / , but all Romance languages lost the sound.

Usage in French

H is a female name when you pronounce the letter and buy men when he pronounces. However, in France, purchased the pronunciation seems to be most in use and an overwhelming majority of the population considers the name as pronounced as male, most dictionaries being gradually same except the Littr. Note: this is so for the letters F, H, L, M, N, R and S.

French, h can be silent or aspirated ; its type depends on its etymology. The h is not aspirated at the beginning of a word and prevents binding and elision. The silent h, type "normal," allows linking and elision. Neither represents a sound.

The PM is also used to manufacture certain digraphs as ch (or for k) and ph (F).
