Henriette Walter, born in 1929 in Sfax ( Tunisia ) is a French linguist, professor emeritus of linguistics at the University of Haute Bretagne in Rennes , and director of laboratory phonology at the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes at the Sorbonne. She is the mother of Hector Obalk.

She has written books highly specialized language as well as popular works (The French here, there, over there).

Harriet Walter was born in Tunisia to a French mother and a father of Italian origin. She soon learns to handle languages: she spoke French at home, the Italian school and hear Arabic and Maltese in the street.
