The major cities of Hesse:

The largest rivers are the Fulda , the Lahn , the Main and Rhine.

The landscape is hilly, with numerous mountain ranges, like the Rhn , the Westerwald , the Taunus , the Vogelsberg , the Knll and Spessart.

The population is concentrated in the southern part of Hesse in the Rhine-Main region.

The Rhine forms the border on the south-west without crossing the state, except an old branch, called Alt-Rhein.

The mountain range between the Main and the Neckar River is called the Odenwald. Ried is the plain between the river Main, Rhine and Neckar, and the reliefs of the Odenwald.

Politics and administration

Landtag (state parliament), Wiesbaden

The voters elect the Hesse state parliament , the provincial parliament, which has 118 members. The CDU lost in January 2008 the absolute majority it had held since 2003. Due to the entry of the party Die Linke in parliament, no coalition could be found and the previous government of the CDU remained in power, albeit a minority.

New elections in January 2009, attempting to address this precarious situation, and giving back to the CDU a wide lead over other parties, the SPD emerged as the big loser of the election. The majority of the Diet, is then held by the conservative CDU and the liberal FDP. Great loss for the SPD, the vote allows Roland Koch of Hesse reassert itself, having nearly lost his post as Minister-President in January 2008. The Left, meanwhile, has confirmed its entry into the state parliament.

The Minister-President (German Ministerprsident) is the leader in Hesse (He is elected by the provincial parliament.) of the Land Government.

Minister-President since 1945
