The history of the Isle of Man , except for the prehistoric era is generally divided into four periods:
- The first is that in which the Celts occupied the island, from 500 BC. J.-C , approximately;
- second, that of the Viking invasions , the first mention dates back to about Man 798 (sacked from St. Patrick ) and the takeover by the Scandinavians and the establishment of a royal line of Norway ;
- the third is the era of British rule in the person of the earls of Derby and Dukes of Atholl ;
- and the fourth in the contemporary period since 1866 , the date from which the island has received increasing autonomy.
Summary
|
Recent research tend to show that before 8500 BC. , Man was related to Cumbria with a strip of land which has gradually been invaded by the sea . The situation is true today and it was even more at the time, the Europe has not yet entered the Atlantic period , more humid.
The Neolithic mark on the Isle of Man, the arrival of new migrants and the establishment of a robust population of sedentary farmers.
This is the Neolithic has left more traces on the Isle of Man . The site of Minorca, near the small town of Laxey , houses a cairn , known as the "King Orry's Grave" and wrongly attributed to the hero Manx Godred Crovan (died 1095 ). This falls to 12 meters long and it is much earlier date -4000 approximately . It dates from the same period the site of Mull Hill , south of the island, stone circle 18 meters in diameter . The site Cashtal yn Ard , in the parish of Maughold , it is more recent ( -2000 ) .
Ultimately, the discoveries made on the island and back to the Neolithic are much more numerous than had been envisaged by the archeology of the nineteenth century. It is customary to give all of these sites the generic name of "Neolithic sites of Ronaldsway (Ronaldsway Neolithic sites), which identifies the set of traces left by the Manx farmers. They show that the land was cultivated before the introduction of the first metal tools.
Around 1800 BC. AD , the climate warms and becomes drier, agriculture is a big improvement. All regions of the Isle of Man profit from even the heights hitherto neglected.
The tools used are similar to those used at the same time in Ulster , which may suggest trade between Ulster and Galloway which will benefit the Isle of Man. We can not however exclude that the bronze had been extracted on the island itself. There were in fact deposits of bronze on the peninsula of Langness and the hill Bradda.
This period also marks the beginning of defensive military structures, as on the hill South Barrule. Two walls fortified circular suggests that the community felt the need to unite to face adversity .
Celtic Period
Arrival of the Celts
It was around 550 BC. AD the Celtic Hallstatt culture is spreading in the British Isles from continental Europe. The theory of a massive invasion is strongly questioned the benefit of acculturation facilitated by trade .
The Celtic languages will gradually diversify and, if the strap is spoken on the island until the fifteenth century , it will give way to a language which is derived and which will be called Manx. It is likely that the Celtic civilization was introduced on the Isle of Man from Britain.
The common base of Celtic legend suggests that it exists at that time was a real cultural entity in the region around the Irish Sea. The characters of Manannan Mac Lir , Conchobar , king of Ulster, Culainn , the blacksmith of the Isle of Man, are themes in many Celtic countries.
The Isle of Man in Roman times
In 81 - 82 , in his conquest of the British Isles, the Roman general Julius Agricola considering the invasion of Ireland. But his plans are short-lived and he gathered his troops in the south-west of Scotland , leaving Ireland at peace, but also the Isle of Man. The Isle of Man has indeed never had the Roman invasion. However, it has benefited like other neighboring areas subject to Rome , the values of the pax romana that establish favorable conditions throughout the region of the Irish Sea. This led in particular to abandon several forts on the island, as ny Chollagh Close , Ballacagen , Ballanorris and Ballanicholas .
Subsequently, when the Roman army in Scotland trying to complete the construction of Hadrian's Wall , the Celtic people are repressed by Rome and many movements took place in the Irish Sea. This is confirmed by the fortification of several oppidums in south-west of Scotland as St Bees and Ravenglass. It seems that the countries of Roman Britain are under attack from Celtic Ireland and Galloway in particular . Although little archaeological evidence can confirm the fact, the Isle of Man probably plays a role in these movements bellicose. Thus, an underground pre-Christian era discovered in the Ronaldsway site may have been the defensive .
Introduction of Christianity
The fall of the Roman Empire in the early fifth century allows the development of maritime contacts between the countries formerly under its domination and Celtic peoples. Thus, Christian missionaries undertake the evangelization of these new territories. It is commonly accepted that Christianity was imported into the Isle of Man by emissaries of the Church of Rome, as the monk Irish St. Patrick's or St. Ninian at Candida Casa (Whithorn, Galloway ) and, subsequently, the monks from the Celtic countries, and Ireland in particular, effecturent mission trips from the year 500.
| Found on the Isle of Man Celtic crosses carved in the alphabet Ogham characteristic of Old Irish , evidence of the links between the Church of Ireland and of Man. Further south of Ireland, we find this type of cross in western Wales and Cornwall. |
These missionaries contributed to the building of chapels where they prayed. But the lack of space required to perform baptisms and preaching outside. The reforms they had undertaken, in addition, were particularly deep in that Celtic tribes retained the doctrines considered pagan by the church. Thus he was a Celtic form the practice of the Catholic Church, although Ireland and therefore the Isle of Man, had adopted the Roman rituals early in the seventh century. Nevertheless, despite the Synod of Whitby ( 664 ), Irish and Manx retained a particular form and any island to 716 .
The first Christian community on the Isle of Man seems to have been founded in Maughold , an Irish saint, Machaoi (McCuill), which notably gave its name to the parish, which is the origin of other monasteries in Galloway The Kintyre and Ulster .
The Isle of Man has more than 200 religious sites called keeills. Even though their structure appears to date earlier than the Scandinavian period, they often contain pre-Celtic Cross 716. This is probably the names of saints venerated in the location of these keeills who gave the names of the 17 parishes of the Isle of Man .
The Manx Celtic at the time
The Manx people living in the Celtic era of agriculture and fishing and living in round houses (similar to crannog Scottish), a lifestyle similar to the one he led during the Iron Age . The site of Port y Candas near Ballacraine , is shown. Living conditions are still rather rudimentary, the population is small, as evidenced by several discoveries of skeletons .
The study of some keeills tend to prove that the people moved seasonally into the highlands of the island. Eary the term found in several place names meaning "summer pasture" . Groups of individuals even permanently settled on the heights (more than 300 meters) at the end of the Celtic period. Their buildings were named for Shieling .
Scandinavian Period (the "Celtic-Norse") (798-1275)
The Vikings on the Isle of Man
The early Viking invasions
The first incursion of transcribed Vikings on the Isle of Man date 798. That year, the Chronicle of Ireland said the sacking of the tiny island of St. Patrick (Inis Patraic) by Lochlannaibh (the Vikings). Three years earlier they had attacked the island Scotland to Iona. It's more greed than hatred of Christians that leads them to attack monasteries and churches.
Yet it is not in 798 AD. JC probably took place the first attack of its kind. The monastery of Maughold seems to have been "visited" the beginning of the eighth century . It must be said that the north coast of the island does not offer guaranteed protection against such attacks. In addition, the Isle of Man offers an ideal strategic position between England and Ireland.
The Gall-Gaedhil
The names Manx demonstrates the importance of Scandinavian culture in the lives of the island in the ninth century. It was at this time that the Gall-Gaedhil Ireland. Warriors home mid- Norse mid- Celtic , they colonized much of Ireland and probably also of the Isle of Man . Over the decades, they are based on the population by means of marriage and create a unique island population which are called "Celtic-Norse.
The Norse are Celto- pagans , while the Islanders have been evangelized. It will grow on the island a culture quite original due to the death. Dozens of burial mounds were erected, particularly on the coast, following the ancient Viking customs. Sites Balladoole , Cronk yn Howe and knock them Doonee are included in this framework . The rich military equipment found in these tombs can imagine the elaborate funeral rites. According to some researchers, the richness of the graves had to plan to show that these families from Scandinavia took possession of the land of Man on a total and definitive .
Many cemeteries Manx Christians were erected on the location of these sites and Vikings seem to have seen the two cultures coexist simultaneously . It was therefore a close relationship between the Celts and Scandinavians on the Isle of Man in the ninth century.
In the following centuries, many warlords are trying to get their hands on the Isle of Man. The Orkneyinga saga reveals that armed fleets spent the winter on Man and the Sea resumed in fine weather. For this reason, the population of the island ensured the maintenance of several defense sites. And sites built in the Bronze Age or Iron Age were still operating in the eleventh century or had been reactivated: Merriu Cronk ny , ny Hawin Cass , ny Close Chollagh or even the fortifications of the Isle St. Patrick.
Conversion to Christianity
Norse-Celtic peoples adopted Christianity in the late tenth century , although it was gradual. There are traces of religion on the Scandinavian cross several cemeteries Manx (as Thorwald's cross in the parish of Andreas or the presence of runic characters on crosses in the cemetery of Kirk Michael ).
The Kingdom of Man and the Isles
When, in 1079 , the Celtic-Norse king Godred Crovan ("King Orry" Manx legends) attempts an invasion of the Isle of Man for the third time he needed to battle Skyhill (also called "Battle of Scacafell"), near Ramsey , facing an army of 300 Manx who can not resist him. The power of the Vikings on the Island is shrinking then forced to give in to the new king. A kingdom is formed under the name of kingdom of Man and the Isles , which includes the Isle of Man and archipelagos Scotland of the Hebrides , the Shetland and Orkney.
A period of confusion occurs shortly after the death of the sovereign ( 1095 ). The King of Norway Magnus III Berftt , settles on Man into a base to prepare attacks on Wales and Ireland. The situation gives the son of Godred Crovan, successors to their father, regardless of legitimacy.
Clan battles are emerging on the island, between factions representing Norway, Scotland or England. The reign of Godfred V Man ( in 1153 - one thousand one hundred eighty-seven ) sees the kingdom of Man and the Isles lose much of its land. Only the island of Skye and the area of Lewis on the island of Lewis and Harris are still attached to him.
The line manages to perpetuate itself and, until 1265, the Isle of Man is run by the descendants of Scandinavian Godred Crovan. In 1261, Alexander III of Scotland is sending envoys to Norway to negotiate the surrender of the islands. This initiative does not lead to anything, the hostilities are between the two parties and ends with an indecisive battle at Largs ( 1263 ). Nevertheless, the Norwegian king Haakon Haakonsson died the following winter. It allows Alex to complete his conquest. Magnus , king of Man and the Isles (from 1252 to 1265), who had fought on the Norwegian side, is forced to make all the islands except the island of Man. He died two years later, in 1266, King Magnus VI of Norway cedes the islands, including the Isle of Man, Scotland, at the Treaty of Perth for 4000 marks (merks in Scotland ) and an annuity of 100 marks. But it was not until 1275 and the Battle of Ronaldsway , near Castletown , in which the army of Manx Godfred Magnuson was defeated by the Scots to Alexander, to ensure permanent domination of Scotland on the Isle of Man. Scandinavian king no longer reigns then do the Isle of Man.
Life on the Isle of Man at the time of Norse-Celto
The Tynwald
One of the more brilliant innovations of the Scandinavian period the current parliament of the Isle of Man, the Tynwald. It owes its origin to the kings Celtic-Norse island. It is even reputed to be the oldest parliament in the world who have had a continuous existence since 979 (but can trace its roots to the late 800s when one considers that the name means the place where there was a Norman who assembled looters did not reside permanently on the island) .
Norse Celts cons
It seems clear that the Scandinavian period did not alter significantly the Celtic culture of the islanders. Despite the presence on Viking Man, the Gaelic , ancestor of the Manx , continued to be widely spoken by the population. Moreover, it does not appear that the Scandinavian population has had a social status more advanced than the Celtic population .
Status of Catholicism
The Cathedral of Saint-germanic St. Patrick
While all Europe was converted to Catholicism, the arrival of pagan conquerors on the Isle of Man has considerably delayed the adoption of the Catholic religion, although 716 AD. JC is the official date of Ulster and Man will be submitted to the Church of Rome. It was not until the late twelfth century to witness the construction of the first Manx cathedral, the Cathedral of St. German, on the island of St. Patrick. This island was previously the venue for three churches, which you can still see the ruins.
The construction of the Cathedral of St. German is to the credit of Bishop Simon ( one thousand two hundred and twenty-seven - 1247 ), although the modern building has several phases of renovation and reconstruction later. Archaeological excavations have shown the presence of a home occupation north of the Cathedral s the twelfth century , replaced the fifteenth century by a dormitory for priests Roolwer, missionary bishop A few decades ago, many bishops, as Roolwer ( XI century ), have struggled to evangelize the island, with the approval of the Manx kings. Thus, Olaf I of Man who invited the monks of Furness to come to evangelize the island in 1134 and founded the Abbey of Rushen , in Ballasalla . The decision-making center of the Isle of Man is transferred from Peel Castle to Castle Rushen , making Castletown the new capital of the island. The decades following were the scene of rivalries between Scotland and England for dominance of the Isle of Man. But the Scottish dynasty weakened from the late thirteenth century , is unopposed as the English king Edward I claimed the island and took possession in 1290. It will use as they wish as royal gift, deliver it first to John Balliol , then to Anthony Beck , Bishop of Durham and finally, that Piers Gaveston , the favorite of Edward II , who inherited it. But the Scots do not want to relinquish their claims provided on Man. Robert the Bruce , king of Scotland, landed at Ramsey in 1313 and besieged the Castle Rushen in Castletown It capitulate after a month. Thereby calling the Isle of Man in the hands of Thomas Randolph , Earl of Moray. But the Scottish forces provide only weak protection of the island while it is prey to looters who came from Ireland ( 1316 ). English and Scottish are fighting back the island, causing continuous attacks, installing the head of the island of the lords of their country, despite several ceasefires ( 1318 , 1328 and 1333 ) Taking possession English In 1333 , the English King Edward III gives the island the hands of William Montagu , first Earl of Salisbury. England is now the only decision maker in issues relating to the Isle of Man. In 1392 , Montagu's son, William II , sold the island to William Le Scrope , a supporter of Richard II. The new king of the island will pay dearly for his support to Richard, and when Henry IV ascended the throne of England ( 1399 ), Le Scrope is part of the executed. Henry IV gives the island to Henry Percy , first Earl of Northumberland. But in 1403 Percy rebels against the King of England which will confiscate all his titles, including the king of Man, two years later. The island returned once again to the king of England decides to give the management James Stanley , whose family later received the title of earls of Derby. The Derby will remain at the head of the Isle of Man until 1736. Because of the Anglo-Scottish disorders and frequent incursions of pirates from Ireland, the late thirteenth century and fourteenth century as a whole will remain as one of the least safe periods for the inhabitants of the island Man. The cities and countryside are regularly looted and burned. In 1377 , against remuneration, France will propose even Manx protection against these depredations. At the same time, taxes and tithes are increasing dramatically because of the difficulties endured by the Manx Church. New taxes were created: the fish in 1291 , the handicrafts in 1334. In 1302 , Lord of Man imposes a tax on households in response to disagreements over ownership of the Manx churches of St. Michael and St. Maughold by Furness Abbey British Period (1275-1866)
Anglo-Scottish rivalry (XIII and XIV centuries)
Life on the Isle of Man in the fourteenth century
The Earls of Derby (1405-1736)
In 1405 , two years after the rebellion of Henry Percy, King of England gives the Isle of Man to John Stanley , a prelude to a period of three centuries of political stability. The Stanley family styled kings of Man until 1504 , then as Lord of Man , the island ceased to be a kingdom. The first Stanley will never surrender on the Isle of Man. His son, John Stanley II , which will put the first foot, very interested in managing the island and its business , which will oppose a form of power-cons for the interests of Manx people.
Disorders 1642-1651
In 1641 broke out in England 's civil war leading to the execution of King Charles I. On the Isle of Man, discontent is felt more strongly against the policy of James Stanley. On 24 June 1642 , an armed mob went to the Tynwald, the parliament of the Isle of Man, and says she now refuses to pay the decimated for England . In May 1643 , a revolt broke out in Douglas , triggered by the arrest of a man who refused payment of decimating. Things back to normal with the arrest of Governor Christian thought leader of the revolt .
When in 1651 , Stanley leaves for England to fight for Charles II, whose cause he supported, he named William Christian Manx military commander on the island. Stanley was taken prisoner at the Battle of Worcester ( September 3 ) and Countess Charlotte of Trmoille , wife of Stanley, who resides Man negotiates the surrender of the island with the victorious Parliamentarians in exchange for the release of its spouses . That was enough for Manx people, led by William Christian, who was known by his name Manx of Illiam Dhoni. Accompanied by notable Manx, it raises the public against the countess, claiming she plots to save his life and that of her husband while sacrificing the Isle of Man. On October 15 , Lord of Man, James Stanley, is run Bolton , because of his alleged role in the massacre of Bolton (28 May 1644), in which 1,600 civilians and soldiers were massacred by 'Royalist army.
British troops landed on the Isle of Man and Illiam Dhoni lays down its arms. Calm returns. Dhoni will be held a decade later, during a trial marred by irregularities, and executed on the hill Hango on 2 January 1633 , without the king had time to decide on possible thanks.
The island came under the command of the British Parliament in this period of interregnum and Oliver Cromwell appoints an administrator in the person of Thomas Fairfax of Cameron ( 2 November 1651 ).
Restoration of Derby
Upon returning from the English Monarchy ( 1661 ), the new king, Charles II , makes the lordship of the Isle of Man to the Stanley family. He is the son of the late James Earl Stanley, Charles , 8th Earl of Derby, who inherited the title Lord of Man ( 1660 - 1672 ). The dynasty continues through Derby James Stanley , 10th Earl of Derby, who died on 1 February 1736 without a male heir. If the title of Earl of Derby goes to his cousin Edward Stanley , the Lord of Man and Baron Strange return instead to the house of Atholl , represented by James Murray.
The Dukes of Atholl (1736-1830)
James Murray died in 1764 in Dunkeld ( Scotland ), without surviving male descendant. For this reason, his nephew, John Murray , who inherited the title Duke of Atholl and the lordship of the Isle of Man. England intervenes in the management of the island while John Murray is the head of a network of smuggling of goods. For this reason, the Crown convinces him to sell the Isle of Man to 70,000 pounds , it is suddenly appointed governor, which will soothe the final ( 1793 to 1828 ).
The presence of Murray as governor was marked by the renovation of Castle Mona , to Douglas , who became his permanent residence. During the same time, the governor does not hesitate, even being accused of nepotism , to appoint his nephew as head of the Church of Man Living conditions are difficult The first years of Atholl on the Isle of Man are marked by conditions of life particularly difficult for Manx. While the previous decades had seen a significant improvement in living on the island, with the increase of wages due to emigration rather sustained, dramatic events are back behind Man. An outbreak of winter fevers ( 1737 ), followed by a long period of famine ( 1739 - 1741 ), then a new epidemic ( 1742 ) destroy entire families and undermine an economy on shaky ground. Many Manx then saw in mud huts covered with grass and owe their survival to the consumption of herring and potatoes Contemporary period (1866 - XXI century) In 1866 , the Isle of Man gets a local self-government, autonomy is the first formal, but has gradually been extended. During the First and Second World War , the British government house on the island of Man civilian nationals of enemy powers. In the early twentieth century , there has been a revival of traditional music and dances, and, to a lesser extent, the Manx language - which did not prevent the last speaker, Ned Maddrell , s' off in the 1970s. In the years 1960-1970, the tourism from the British Isles began to decline, partly due to the growth of civil aviation and the new attraction exercised by Spain. The Manx government reacts to this situation by making the island a tax haven, which stimulated the economy, despite some cases of corruption. Since the 1990's and early twenty-first century , Manx culture is the subject of greater recognition, which suggests the opening of the first primary school where classes are taught in Manx; economic growth resumed.
