Ielts

The IELTS (International English Language Testing System and Assessment System English International) is an international test of English language managed jointly by the University of Cambridge , the British Council and the Australian organization IDP Education Australia. There is an alternative to standardized test of English that is the TOEFL.

IELTS is accepted by most universities in the U.S. (over 2,000 in October 2008), United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, educational institutions offering international qualifications English (Europe, Asia) and by various professional organizations.

IELTS has the following characteristics:

  • Review materials have different accents and writing styles to minimize linguistic and cultural biases. The test focuses on "International English", which includes the British English , the American English and other varieties.
  • IELTS tests the ability to speak, read, listen and write English.
  • for each of the four skills above, the score is expressed as a value between 1 ("Non User") and 9 ("Expert User").
  • Applicants may choose the Academic Module or the General Training Module:
    • The Academic Module is for those among them who wish to enroll in universities or other institutions of higher education.
    • the General Training Module is intended for those who wish to undertake further training or who pass the test in a professional or to immigrate to an English speaking country (IELTS is required by Canada and Australia).

Dates and places of examination

The 500 IELTS centers in the world offer up to 48 dates throughout the year in 120 different countries and each of these centers can offer up to four sessions per month depending on demand.

The British Council also offers test preparation.

It is also possible to prepare for IELTS by purchasing textbooks or workbooks published by most language publishers or while taking courses specific to language schools. You also have the option to enroll in language schools abroad that offer training and practice tests as part of a living language

Comparison

IELTS shows an interest in relation to other tests because it assesses the four skills (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking). This is a face to face with an examiner.
