Laxey in Manx ) is a village on the coast north-east of the Isle of Man. In the census of 2001 , there were 1,725 people, 1,768 in 2006. Its name comes from Old Norse Laxa ("salmon river").

In the early nineteenth century , they began to extract lead and zinc , which gave the city a major industry. In 1854, we built a Ferris wheel, known as the Laxey Wheel, which allowed to pump water to the mine, but gradually the industry declined and dwindled fully thirty-five years later, in 1929.

Tourism

Today, Laxey attracts many tourists thanks to its many parks account, including the Laxey Glen Gardens. The town is built around a valley. Several streets are being developed into trails and eventually out of Laxey.

Laxey Station is the terminus of the line of Snaefell.

The Laxey Wheel

The Laxey Wheel, also known as Lady Isabella.

This wheel was nicknamed "Lady Isabella" after the name of the wife of Henry Hope , Lieutenant-Governor of the island in office at the time of its construction. The engineer Robert Casement, who was the designer. On the impressive diameter of 22 meters, the wheel is one of the most visited tourist attractions in the region for a hundred and fifty years. The Government of the Isle of Man has made the acquisition in 1965 and restored for the occasion.

Other sites

Park Laxey (Laxey Glen). In 1800 , Father William Fitzsimmons began over fifty years the planting of many species of trees. The park is located for visiting tourists R. Williamson in the early twentieth century. After the Second World War , the site was sold to the government of the Isle of Man. Today, seven people are employed to maintain the park.

The tomb of King Orry (nickname Godred Crovan ), at a place called Minorca, is a site frequently visited by tourists. It is a megalithic monument well before the Manx king.
