Natural son of Olav III of Norway and Thorn Jonsdatter, he will take the throne of Norway upon the death of his father in 1093, and will share with his cousin Hkon Magnusson (son of Magnus II , brother of his father, they had their same shared the throne of Norway from 1066 to 1069, date of death of Magnus II) until the death of the latter in 1095.

Magnus III decided to hold a major naval expedition to the islands of the western Norway since the time the Vikings considered an integral part of its territory.

King Magnus and his fleet began by occupying the Orkneys. It captures both Jarls Thorfinnsson Paul and Erlend Thorfinnsson that are sent to Norway where they likely will die in captivity of illness respectively to Bergen and Trondheim. The king then entrusted the kingship of the northern islands to his young son Sigurd that surrounds advisors . After this victory the king and his fleet crossed off the Scotland and landed at Kintyre. A treaty was concluded according to the saga with the King " Malcolm " .

Magnus also sign a treaty of alliance with the Ard ri renn and king of Munster ; Muirchertach Mr mac Briain Ua Toirdhleabhach including any provision provides for the marriage of the girl Biadyamin the King of Ireland with Sigurd 's son Magnus accompanying .

Back in Norway Magnus conflicts with neighboring king Inge I of Sweden. Norwegians are victorious at the Battle of Foxerne in Vstergtland and a comprehensive peace agreement was signed in 1101 during a meeting between the three Scandinavian kings: Inge I of Sweden , Eric I of Denmark and Magnus of Norway. As a token of peace Magnus married a daughter of Inge; Margrete called on this occasion "Fredkulla" (ie Woman of Peace)

After 9 years of his reign King Magnus decides to return to the Norwegian possessions of the British Isles. With his Irish ally takes control of the Scandinavian kingdom of Dublin. The two monarchs spend the winter 1102 / one thousand one hundred and three in the wars in Connacht before resuming their plans of conquest

Unfortunately the King Magnus died Aug. 24 at an obscure meeting in Ulster . A son of Erling Jarl of Orkney who accompanied Erland was killed at his side. The Norwegian fleet then withdrew to the Orkney and King Sigurd I of Norway decided to abandon his bride and return to Norway in the fall ( 1103 ).

Magnus III of Norway married in 1101 Margaret of Sweden, daughter of King Inge I of Sweden the union remained childless. He had previously been many illegitimate children of various concubines of which at least three son and two daughters found in his lifetime:
