/ / Etymology and spelling

Until the nineteenth century, many authors wrote "Mein". In the mid-twentieth century, the Consulate General of France in Frankfurt / Main also still writing Mein ". Since then, German spelling has been taken in French.

Geography

The Main is formed by the junction of two rivers:

It flows 524 km to the Land of Bavaria , Hesse and Baden-Wuerttemberg. It forms large meanders in its central part and passes through the towns of Bayreuth , Bamberg , Wrzburg and Frankfurt , where its speed reaches 190 m / sec. In front of Mainz , the Main flows into the Rhine.

Economic Importance

While winding, the Main is navigable for barges wide gauge on 396 km between Mainz and the mouth of the Regnitz near Bamberg , where it joins the Rhine-Main-Danube , with the latter forming a waterway continues to large gauge between the Rhine and the Danube and thus between the North Sea and the Black Sea.
