Marown is a parish and administrative island of the Isle of Man , located in the sheading of Middle.
Summary |
Marown Parish is one of the three components of the sheading Middle (which also includes the parishes of Braddan and Santon and covers an area about 23 km 2).
Marown has the distinction of being the only parish in the island to have no maritime border.
It includes the villages of Glen Vine and Crosby.
The captain of the parish is Charles Fargher JP. It depends on the constituency of Middle.
Heritage
Parish Churches
The church parish Marown is the new church of St. Runius (Saint Runius New Church), but it encompasses the holy Runius Ancient (St. Runius Old Church) and that of St. Luke (St. Luke's Church). The pastor is the Rev. Ian Davies.
The old church dates from 1200 or so. It was enlarged in 1754 and replaced by the new church around 1860. According to legend, three bishops were buried at the Old St. Runius: Lonnan, Connaghan and Runius.
Houses and mansions
There are also homes steeped in history as the manor of Ellerslie Manor, Manor Ballacotch (formerly known as Hope Lodge) and Ballavagher House.
Archaeological Heritage
The circle Braaid is a Celtic and Norse site consists of a circular wall.
Education
The primary school of the parish was built in the 1980s. It is situated in the village of Glen Vine. The school was enlarged in 2001. Its principal is Miss Carol Maddrell.
There are also, in the parish of Marown, a former school, located in Crosby , near the ancient church of St. Runius. The buildings of the old school is now for teaching foreign languages and serve as a training center for teachers of the island.
