Summary

/ / Geography

The Oder rises to 627 m altitude in Moravia , in Fidlv kopec in the Odersk Hills, eastern foothills of the Sudeten near Olomouc , where he is a part of the border between Silesia and Moravia. After Ostrava , he crosses the border between the Czech Republic and Poland and then flows through the regions ( voivodships ) Polish Silesia , of Opole , in Lower Silesia (and its capital, Wroclaw ) of Lubuskie and finally Western Pomerania and its capital Szczecin.

From its confluence with the Neisse in Ratzdorf (north of Guben in Brandenburg ), to northern Schwedt , the middle marks the border between Poland and Germany. It then passes through the city of Frankfurt / Oder.

Between Schwedt / Oder and Gartz, Oder splits into two branches: the Western Oder (Polish: Odra Zachodnia) and the Eastern Oder (Polish: Odra Wschodnia). The Oder River is western boundary to Mescherin , before starting to flow as the Oder in eastern Polish territory only. The slope of the last thirty kilometers before Szczecin is only a few centimeters. From Szczecin, the river is accessible to seagoing ships

The Oder River empties into the Bay of Szczecin , which communicates with the Baltic Sea. Over the past 150 years, remedial work has reduced the length of the Oder of 1 040 km to 854 now. In 1997 occurred the last great flood of the Oder, which among other severely damaged the city of Wroclaw.
