Topology

Lake in the Ore Mountains.

This massive mountain is named after the numerous deposits of precious metals (silver, tin, cobalt, nickel and iron) scattered in his basement. These resources have enabled many small towns, such Zwickau , Annaberg-Buchholz and Schneeberg , to develop. Of reservoirs, open landscapes and lush forests traversed by trails and resort villages help make the region particularly welcoming.

They form the border between the two countries, over 150 kilometers, extending from the western border of Saxony to the Elbe. The western parts of the Ore Mountains have the highest peaks. The highest summits of this chain are, on the Czech side, the Klnovec (1244 m) and the German side, the Fichtelberg (1214 m). To the west, the Erzgebirge are extended by the Fichtelgebirge Bavarian much lower. To the east, the sandstone mountains of Elba on both banks of the river Elbe could be considered as the easternmost extension of the Ore Mountains. The Ore Mountains have a gentle slope on the north, to Germany, where the cities of Zwickau and Chemnitz are located on the hills, but the southern slope is extremely steep.

Climate

Altenberg winter

The climate of the Ore Mountains is very tough. We call this region of Siberia in derision Saxon or Bavarian, as appropriate. "It was not uncommon, during some winters the cattle stalls and freezes in that significant snowfall in April cover farms. The population was often cut off from the rest of the world. "(Quoted from Athenaeum-sive Universitas Boemo Zinnwaldensis (1717) by Peter Schenk).

The particular relief (gentle slope from north-east to south-east) receives all precipitation on a regular and prolonged. The measured amount of water is approximately twice the plains and snow cover can be very important until April.

When the wind comes from south-east (from Bohemia ) it can cause a phenomenon foehn. Because of these extreme conditions, there are nearly Satzung (border area) a natural forest of dwarf mountain pine (Pinus mugo). This vegetation normally only found in the Alps between 1600 m and 1800 m altitude. It can therefore be no exaggeration to speak of alpine climate.

History

The Ore Mountains were virtually uninhabited at Middle Age and covered with dense forests. In XV century the discovery of silver deposits in Jchymov and tin led to the colonization of the mountains and the creation of cities. The name is derived from the rich mineral resources. Today, these mountains have become tourist resorts especially winter sports. Mining activities ceased with the depletion of deposits.

In the region of the former GDR , the exploitation of uranium has led to contamination of an area of 40 sq. km. Since their closure, the uranium mines are the subject of cleanup that should not prevent a particularly high rate of cancers.
