The National Commission on Geographic Names France includes representatives of ministries and agencies creators collectors or users names and aims to contribute to the conservation and development of coherent toponymic heritage of France.

Institution

The commission was established with the National Council for Geographic Information (CNIG). This commission was established by Decree No. 99-843 of 28 September 1999 , Art. 3 - the Official Gazette of September 30, 1999. Its mission is to contribute to the conservation and development of coherent heritage toponymy of France.

The commission includes representatives of ministries and agencies creators collectors and users of names. It may call upon experts chosen for their competence. Its chairman and rapporteur appointed by order of the Minister responsible for the equipment proposed by the President of the National Council of geographic information for a period of three years.

Currently, CNT is chaired by Mr. Pierre Jaillard, director of the INSEE, rapporteur to the Court of Auditors, and its Rapporteur is Ms. Elizabeth Calvarin, technical expert at the National Geographic Institute (decrees of 5 March 2004 and 27 March 2007).

Mission

An order shall specify the duties and operation (Decree of 1 August 2000 laying down the tasks, organization and functioning of the National Geographical Names):

  • the National Geographic Names contributes to the conservation and development of coherent toponymic heritage of France and has among its tasks to:
    • coordinate utility creators or collectors names;
    • unite the activities of various committees and units responsible for toponymy studies at national, regional or local level;
    • ensure that the necessary homogeneity is ensured in any publication or public document;
    • ensure action specification, standardization, coordination in the implementation and updating of geographical names data bases and processing in French names outside;
    • promote its work and promote the publication and dissemination of reference books place names;
    • raise awareness and training in place names;
    • contribute to cooperation with Francophone countries and representing France in international forums;
  • Furthermore, it can develop draft recommendations and legislation or regulations to achieve these goals.

The National Commission on Geographical Names is not intended to replace the existing committees for both the tasks assigned to them for the privileges that are theirs. These provisions apply in particular to the review commission established by common name of the Order of 15 August 1948 referred to above. The chairman of the committee may consult with the National Geographic Names or one of its members if deemed necessary. The mission of the National Commission on toponymy toponymy as land and sea.
