Peel is a town and district of the Isle of Man. She is the only city that can claim to be quoted since it shelters the only cathedral in the island. In fact, it is only the fourth largest city in terms of population, after Douglas , Onchan and Ramsey. In the census of 2001 , there were 3 785 inhabitants. In Manx language , the city is known as Purt ny Hinshey ("Port Island"), that is to say "near the port of the island (of St. Patrick ).

Peel was never the capital of the island, but the cathedral was the seat of the Lord Bishop of Sodor and Man. Peel is the main port of fisheries of the Isle of Man.

Developments are under study for the city of Peel. According to the city architect Niall McGarrigle, "these adjustments do not affect the construction of new buildings, but rather aim at improving the area around the boardwalk and streets and public spaces, in response to requests from residents Place names

Peel the name comes from Middle English pele (" fortification , palisade ). In the Middle Ages , the city is called Holmtown (from Old Norse Holmris "island" and Middle English town, "city") or sometimes Halland. In Manx , the name of Peel Purt ny Hinshey ("Port Island") .

Peel is sometimes called "Sunset City" because of the beauty of the sunset behind the castle .

Peel Viking Festival

In July, at the same time as the celebration of the Tynwald Day , the national holiday of the Isle of Man, stands at the festival Peel Viking , which is an opportunity to engage in a pageant-related past Celtic Norse Island . Racing longships are organized from the port of Peel. The test, known as the "World Championship Viking Longboat Races" has been held since 1963 . Modern authors argue that Peel is the mythical city of Camelot , City of King Arthur , while the island of St. Patrick is, for them, identified in Avalon .

Peel is the most important port of fishing in the Isle of Man. It is also a port which handles the bulk of imports of oil for consumption Manx.

Cathedral of Peel

Cathedral Peel replaces the Cathedral of Saint Germain, which was situated in the ramparts of the city until the eighteenth century. It is dedicated to Saint Germain and is designated as the Manx Kirk German. It is the seat of the Diocese of Sodor and Man and became cathedral in 1980 only. After the abandonment of the old church of Saint-Germain, plans to build a cathedral had succeeded, but not until 1879 that work began to be completed in 1884.

The site of Peel Castle on the island of St. Patrick , is occupied since prehistoric times. From the sixth century , the place was dedicated to the worship Christian. At the end of the eighth century , the Vikings , Pagans , settled there and then, when Godred Crovan , king of Man, the united kingdom of Man and the Hebrides , the castle became the seat of power Manx.

The castle is surrounded by a wall of speakers. St. Patrick's Church, located in its walls, and the round tower , were built from the eleventh century. The castle housed the apartments of the Lords of the Isle of Man. When the Crown of England returned to power on the island in 1765 , the castle was abandoned and gradually fell into disrepair until the mid- nineteenth century.

The Ward Library

The library opened its doors on 26 September 1907. It bears the name of its benefactor, James Kewley Ward, businessman and politician Canadian , born in 1819 on the current location of the building. Two women from Peel, Anne Crellin and Flo, who had emigrated to the Ohio ( U.S. ), donated over 2,000 books and a large sum of money, which enabled rapid development of the library. Today, Ward Libray has more than 15,000 books .

The Leece Museum, Peel was named after Eddie Leece, former commissioner of Peel, who created him in 1984. Moved in June 2000 , the museum now houses collections relating to the town of Peel (objects, photographs, documents). One can also visit the "Black Hole", a prison cell in which the criminals were locked in Peel. The museum is located right in the old court of Peel, who served as a local court until the early twentieth century .
