In descriptive statistics , a population is an overall finish of objects (the individual or statistical units ) which is doing a study and one that corresponds to one or more common characteristics. We can also talk of a population of nuts produced in a factory unit.

In mathematical statistics , to use the concept of probability the population is assumed to be infinite. Under these conditions, the sample is defined as a set of random variables whose values are observed achievements.

A set of individuals of the same species living perpetuating itself in a given area is a biological population and the scientific discipline which makes the study is the population biology , a field of study that involved both the ecology ( population dynamics , demography , behavioral ecology ...), the population genetics and evolutionary biology.

Human populations are studied by demography , the sociology and geography human.

The description of the populations can be done:

  • Using variables called descriptors (these concern the size , age, birth rates , sex ratio ...).
  • By genetics (estimated gene frequency)
  • By the dynamics ( birth , death , decay ...)
