President Of Tynwald

President of Tynwald is the presiding officer at meetings of Tynwald in Douglas on the Isle of Man and is elected by and from among the members of Tynwald.

President of Tynwald is impartial, but in the case of a tie in a vote of the Legislative Council , its vote can tip the balance. The president oversees the operation of Tynwald. We find an equivalent in the case of the Spokesman of the House of Keys.

The first elected president, Sir Charles Kerruish , was elected in 1990 and remained in office until his retirement in 2000.

Before 1990, the post of President of Tynwald was occupied by the Lieutenant-Governor of the archipelago. It is now jointly linked to the President of the Legislative Council.
