The Rhine is a river of central Europe and the West , along 1230 km. Its catchment area , 185 000 km 2, includes large parts of Switzerland , the Germany and Netherlands , but also extends over the eastern France and western Austria. This is the longest river flowing into the North Sea and one of the busiest waterways in the world.
Summary |
Statistics
The Rhine is about 1 233 km , , 883 km is accessible to vessels with large gauge. At its mouth, its average discharge is approximately 2330 m 3 / s and the maximum measured reached 12 000 m 3 / s (1926), the minimum 600 m 3 / s (1947). The Rhine catchment area covers 198 735 km 2.
Basin
The basin is bordered by the Rhine (from the west and in the direction of clockwise) basins of the Meuse , the Ems , the Weser and the Elbe (all flowing into Wed North or Baltic Sea ), the Danube ( Black Sea ), the Po and the Rhone ( Mediterranean Sea ). The Rhine flows in a general north-northwest along very different natural regions like the Alps , the Northern Alps , the Rhine Graben , the Mittelgebirgsschwelle or lower Rhine valley.
The river crosses the Swiss , the Austrian , the German and the Netherlands. It serves as a border to Liechtenstein and France. Its basin also extends over the entire Luxembourg and small parts of Belgium and of Italy.
Etymology
The name of the river might come from the Indo-European * H 1 reihe-, meaning "flow". This origin is common to Latin Rivus, Spanish and English rio river. The Celts named the River Rhenos, the Romans Rhenus.
The name of the Rhine Rhein in Germany , Rijn in Dutch , Rein in Romansh.
Geography
General
The Rhine rises in the Alps on the flanks of the St. Gotthard massif in the east of Switzerland (canton of Grisons ). The official start of the Rhine to the source of the Upper Rhine , which became known as "Rhine" from its confluence with the Rhine later.
He then makes a transition between the two parts of Lake Constance : first the Obersee } ("Upper Lake") and then resumed a pace of 4 km river takes the name Seerhein ("Rhine Lake") to arrive at the Lower Lake (Lower Lake).
Then he continues by falls near Schaffhausen and joins the Aare River upstream of Basel. The Rhine then descends to the North in the middle of the upper Rhine valley, receiving the Ill and Lauter west, the Neckar to the east.
In Mainz , he received the Main and turns west, then through the north Rhine mountain where he grows the Lahn and east of the Moselle from the west at Koblenz. In this section, the river valley narrows and gradually cut, this is called the "heroic valley, dominated by numerous medieval castles filled with history and legends (including that of the Lorelei ).
In Bonn last he enters the plain, and empties into the North Sea partially by mixing its waters with those of the Meuse in a large delta.
His bed passes through or six countries: Switzerland , the Liechtenstein , the Austria , the Germany , the France and the Netherlands. It is the natural border between Switzerland and Liechtenstein, between Switzerland and Austria between Germany and Switzerland and, in part, between Germany and France. It passes through what is called the Rhineland Europe , the most dynamic region in Europe and one of the world's most dynamic.
Route
Sources
The Rhine takes its name from the confluence of the Rhine prior and posterior Rhine at Tamins in the canton of Grisons in eastern Switzerland. Upstream of this confluence, the basin of the two rivers that form the Rhine covers a vast area branched from the Gotthard massif in the west to Val di Lei in Italy to the south and Davos in the east. The five largest rivers in the basin are the Upper Rhine, the Rhine later, the Albula , the Landwasser and Julia.
The Vorderrhein originates from multiple sources in western Surselva and headed eastward. One of these sources, located at Lake Toma at 2,345 m altitude, is generally regarded as the source of the Rhine, Lake then flows into the Rein da Tuma. Lake Toma is not the most distant source of the Rhine, that point back to the source of Rein da Medel. The Rein da Tuma is also shorter than the Rein da Maighels the Rein da Curne and Dischmabach. In its lower course, through the Rhine Gorge past the Ruinaulta.
The Rhine posterior is slightly shorter than the Rhine. It rises on the slopes of Rheinwaldhorn in the mountains of the Adula , near the border between the cantons of Grisons and Ticino , then goes first to the east before turning north.
The Rhine is joined later near Sils im Domleschg by the Albula. The Albula is itself powered by Julia and Landwasser. The source is located in the Albula Bergn / Bravuogn , that of Julia above Bivio at Julier Pass and those of Landwasser in the valley of Davos.
The source of the river the southernmost, the Lei di Reno is located in Italy at Lake Lei.
Alpine Rhine
The Upper Rhine and the Rhine posterior to the confluence Bonaduz to form the Alpine Rhine (Alpenrhein in German). At Chur , it turns sharply northward. Between Bonaduz and Lake Constance , he traveled 86 km and descends 599 m to 396 m altitude. It flows through the Rhine valley , an alpine valley glacaire. Near Sargans , the line of the watershed between the Rhine and the Aare is located just a few meters above the maximum rating of the Rhine. Alpine Rhine as the Sargans after border between Liechtenstein and Switzerland , then a part of the border between Austria and Switzerland.
The Rhine flows into Lake Constance in the form of a small delta interior, bounded on the west by the Alter Rhein and Rhein is channeled. This delta is in many places a nature reserve and bird sanctuary and includes the localities of Austrian Gaiau , Hchst and Fuach.
Lake Constance
Alpine Rhine flows into Lake Constance. This consists of two separate lakes, the Obersee ("Upper Lake"), the larger of the two, and Lower Lake (Lower Lake), connected by a stream of water 4 miles long, the Seerhein ("Rhine Lake").
The Rhine leaves the lower lake at Stein am Rhein , about sixty miles west of its arrival in Lake Constance.
Haut-Rhin
After Stein am Rhein , at the western end of Lake Constance, starts Haut-Rhin (Upper Rhine in German). It flows westward and goes from 395 meters to 252 meters.
After Schaffhausen are the Rhine Falls , with an average flow of 373 m 3 / s (700 m 3 / s in summer), it is the second waterfall of the most powerful of Europe after Dettifoss in Iceland. Upper Rhine is marked by numerous dams, with several quick natural parts. At Koblenz , the Rhine is joined by the Aare , which with 557 m 3 / s is more powerful than the first (439 m 3 / s), but shorter.
Upper bounds on the Rhine almost all of its course the border between Germany and Switzerland. Switzerland does not extend on the north shore at Stein am Rhein, Schaffhausen and around Basel.
Upper Rhine
In the center of Basel, the first major town on the route of the river, the Rhine forms a bend and headed north. The bridge is located in the center of the elbow defines the Upper Rhine and Upper Rhine. It flows about 300 km across the Rhine Graben from 252 meters to 75 meters. He is joined by Ill near Strasbourg , the Neckar at Mannheim and the Main in front of Mainz.
The southern half of the upper Rhine forms the border between Germany and France. The northern half between the Rhineland-Palatinate to the west of Baden-Wuerttemberg and Hesse in the east.

Hydrological Plan
The hydrological regime of the Rhine is harmonious, all its tributaries have additional inputs. Until Lake Constance , his regime is nival. Lake Constance has a tendency to diminish its vitality. After the fall of the Rhine , it receives the most abundant water and marked by the stamp sheet. The Rhine stock 410 m 3 / s and Aare 610m 3 / s, are the Rhine at Basel in 1030 m 3 / s with a peak in June and a minimum in January. The Rhine runs to almost half its rate for 20% of his pelvis. In Strasbourg , he received Ill., which provides 60 m 3 / s, somewhat mitigating the nival. He will lose this scheme as and when it receives tributaries in rainfed winter with high water. The contributions of the Neckar and Main tend to regulate its flow. But it was at Koblenz the Rhine loses his nival regime for rain and snowfall in two peaks due to the contribution of the Moselle (400 m 3 / s), maximum winter. From Koblenz, its maximum winter exceeds the summer, setting the minimum in October. Its average flow reached 2000 m 3 / s}}.
- February: 2540 m 3 / s
- June: 2,090 m 3 / s
- October: 1480 m 3 / s
It receives little after major tributaries, except the Lippe and the Ruhr which bear his final flow Lobith to 2300 m 3 / s.
Average monthly flow (m 3 / s) measured at the hydrological station Ress altitude: 2 m-watershed: 185 000 km 2 - calculated for the period 1930-1997

History
His character border international is relatively recent, with the exception of the period when the Roman Empire had made his bulwark against the northern barbarians , with a border ( limes ) forts dotted like Cologne or Strasbourg. Between the fall of the Roman Empire and the conquest of Alsace by Louis XIV , the river was an integral and ferments the Germanic world, who nicknamed Vater Rhein, Rhine father.
Traces of history are most apparent in the Mittelrheintal between Bingen and Koblenz that UNESCO recognized World Heritage Site in 2002. On the slopes along the Rhine castles are enthroned above the vineyard slopes. Tourists who want to experience the romance are attracted here by the myth of Lorelei.
Economy
The Rhine since the Middle Ages is an exceptional way trade and a vital artery of the West.
Between Basel and its estuary, the Rhine flows through one of the most densely populated Western Europe, historically rich in mutual trade. This sector is the heart of the European backbone.
Rhine valley was also home to one of the main sites of the industrial revolution : the Ruhr , which enjoyed a large deposit of mineral resources including coal , easily accessible and conducive to the development of industrialization.
The Final Act of the Congress of Vienna dedicated in 1815 , the principle of freedom of navigation on international rivers.
In 1831, with the first convention Rhine (Convention of Mainz, Mainzer Akte), cities have lost the right battery. Since the Mannheim Convention of 1868 , the Rhine is classified as "international waters" since the last bridge of Basel to the North Sea , ensuring the Swiss free access to the sea The headquarters of the Central Commission for Navigation Rhine is Strasbourg. Founded in 1815 when a href = "% C3% Congr A8s_de_Vienne" title = "Congress of Vienna> Vienna Congress, it is the oldest international organization.
Several nuclear plants have been built on the banks of the Rhine:
- Leibstadt NPP (Switzerland)
- Fessenheim nuclear power plant (France)
- Philippsburg Nuclear (Germany)
- Biblis nuclear power plant (Germany)
- NPP Mlheim-Krlich (Germany)
The port of Basel , situated on the Rhine, is the only access road to the sea from Switzerland , which imports many bulk commodities by barge.
In 2003, the UNESCO has included 68 km of the Valley of the Upper Middle Rhine in the World Heritage List with the rock of the Lorelei near the town of Sankt Goar.
Environment
The NPP Fessenheim uses Rhine water for its cooling . Such swings in temperature can cause problems for salmonids .
French Departments
The Rhine gives its name to two French departments :
Two former departments briefly created under Napoleon I owed him as their name:
Rhine Delta
The Netherlands , the Rhine forms a large delta , partially shared with the Meuse. It is divided into several branches, the main ones:
- Waal , extended by Merwede upper , lower Merwede , New Merwede , Nieuwe Maas , streams connected to many others, including Noord and Dordtsche Kil.
- Pannerden channel , which share the linen and separates into:
- IJssel , to the north, which flows into the IJsselmeer
- Lower Rhine , to the west, which continues as Lek and joins the Nieuwe Maas
- Kromme Rijn , which detaches from the lower Rhine and continues as Leidse Rijn and Old Rhine
- Dutch IJssel , between Old Rhine and Lek
The castles of the Rhine Valley
The Rhine Valley offers a large concentration of castles. Stately homes, castles defensive, tolls, protection of travelers, all had their usefulness. Many lost their crenellated towers in fires caused by the French army of Louis XIV and, in the eighteenth century, during fighting against the French revolutionaries and the noble emigrants refugees Koblenz. This is the nineteenth century with the creation of the Germanic Confederation in 1815, many castles were rebuilt.
In literature
- Honore de Balzac , L'Auberge rouge , 1831 : "The two young men had therefore abandoned the deep admiration that come before the learned men at the sight of the Rhine and landscapes of Swabia, between Mainz and Cologne ; strong nature, rich, powerful rugged, full of memories feudal green, but that keeps the fingerprints everywhere iron and fire (...) , . "
- Victor Hugo , Le Rhin, 1842 : "There is a whole history of Europe (...) in this river warriors and thinkers in this great wave that boosted France, in the deep murmur that thrills the Germany. The Rhine has everything. "
Quotes
- "Der Rhein, Deutschlands Strom, aber nicht Deutschlands Grenze." ("The Rhine river in Germany, but not the border of Germany.") ( Ernst Moritz Arndt who answered the French doctrine of natural boundaries expressed by the Convention.)
