Summary

/ / History

The current division follows that of former Catholic parish whose name has varied over time, since we find it spelled Sanctain, Santain, Santan and Santon. The name originates from the parish church dedicated to Saint Sanctain which stands on the site of an old chapel (or Keeill) 1 500 years old, so well before the departure of Rome to Augustine of Canterbury and arrival at Canterbury. Sanctain name is of Irish descent and a legend of this saint is the disciple of St. Patrick. He was the bishop of Cell da (Church of the two forts) .

The choice of the head of the parish of St. Sanctain, like that of twelve other courses of the island rests with the British crown. Before the dissolution of the monasteries by King Catholic Henry VIII of England between 1538 and 1541 , it was the responsibility of the abbot of Rushden. When the British monarch appoints new vicar , the Lieutenant Governor receives official documents initialed by the sovereign. During the Mass Induction of new Vicar, he presents these documents and the grantee to the Archbishop of the Diocese of Sodor and Man in seeking confirmation by the Archbishop of choice of the crown.

Limitations of the Parish

Santon railway station.

The parish is bounded on the north by Valley Crogga with Newtown and the city's recent Mount Murray. To the south it ends just before the valley and the new bridge Ballalonna Fairy. The maritime limits range from the mouth of the Crogga near Port Soderick over the course of Santon, Port and Port Grenaugh Soldrick to the mouth of the small Santon, whose course is largely outside the which forms the parish boundary north-west (inland).

Small and barren, the parish is known for its cliffs, steep, monuments, sometimes in ruins, and landscapes.

Manx coast, including the rocky slate headlands south are dotted with ruins of old forts that date back over 2000 years. Four of them have been excavated and can be visited, including that of Santon, via the coastal footpath. They are all defended by a rampart on the landward side, and excavations at Cronk ny Merriu have shown that access to the fort was by a door firmly reinforced .

The Scandinavians who arrived on the Isle of Man in the eighth and ninth centuries used it sometimes these forts from the Iron Age, covering the old parts of residential buildings with square characteristics of their architecture. It remains a fine example to Cronk ny Merriu which served as basis for the construction of the House of Manannan (House of Manannan), ethnographic museum located in the port of Peel.
