Slovak is a language belonging to the Slavic group of the Western family of Indo-European languages , spoken mainly in Slovakia and Czech Republic. Slovak minorities exist in Vojvodina , in Hungary , in Ukraine (region of Subcarpathian Ruthenia , Czechoslovakia from 1918 to 1938) in Austria , in Poland , in Romania and immigrant communities retain their language use including Canada , the States U.S. and Australia.

It is very close to the Czech including written, but differs phonetically and grammatically. It is also close to the Polish , and more generally the mutual understanding is more or less easy with all the western and southern Slavic languages ( Slovenian , Serbian , Croatian , etc.). The Slovak uses a Latin alphabet modified using diacritics same those used in Czech for phonemes common or unique to Slovak phonemes specific to record some sounds.

Most adults Slovak and Czech are able to understand without difficulty, having been in constant contact with both languages through radio and national television, until the partition of Czechoslovakia in 1993. Those who have not had this opportunity, especially younger ones, may have difficulty understanding, when the use of some very different words, or speaking too fast. However, it still has the right to use the Slovak official communication to the Czech authorities as during the existence of Czechoslovakia. Czech films are not dubbed or subtitled in Slovak (except those for children). Gustv Slameka, the Minister of Transport of the Czech government under Jan Fischer , originally from Slovakia, Slovak uses exclusively in his work.
