Subdivisions Of The Isle Of Man

Map of subdivisions of the Isle of Man.

The Isle of Man is now divided into parishes and sheadings island or administrative grouping each different localities.

Summary

/ / Subdivisions administrative and traditional

The Isle of Man is traditionally divided into two areas each of three sheadings , the main division of the territory.

These sheadings are subdivided into 24 administrative divisions with 4 different status. Traditionally, these subdivisions were all parishes (the territory numbered 17) but no longer the case today and the official documents sometimes refer to as "parishes island" not to be confused with the current administrative parishes. Collectively, the 24 administrative subdivisions are commonly called "administrative parishes" or sometimes abuse "parishes", although the two terms are also unfair because it depends on their status.

To avoid confusion, we should mention the exact status given in the table below (and remember that the term "parish" used administratively for some of them do not always correspond to the traditional definition based on the old definitions religious). In addition to cutting of sheadings was changed for two of them with moving the old parish of Onchan.

Constituencies

The territory is divided into fifteen "constituencies (constituencies in official documents Manx) which may in some cases cross the borders of sheadings; According to their population, they each elect one to three MHK (elected members of the House of Keys ) Detailed List of Subdivisions

The generic current administrative subdivisions of the second order is usually "parish" (parish), by tradition, although current entities are sometimes smaller than the older parishes, and are 4 different official statuses (given in table) so as not to conflict with traditional or religious designations current. A French translation may be the generic "township", but high risk of confusion with the constituencies. On , and as in other French and English sites, we can name them simply "parishes" (collectively), and describing traditional parishes as "island" (insular) as do the reference sites Manx.
