History

In the early Middle Ages, the Kingdom of Alemannia consisted of many small kingdoms on the territory of the Alemanni. These are submitted by the Franks under Clovis I and I. Theodebert. From the early sixth century the Alemannia is a duchy under the control of the Franks , until it was dissolved in 746 because of the massacre Cannstatt.

In 829 the kingdom of Swabia is formed on the same territory, which is attributed to Louis II the German and thus to the East Francia in the Treaty of Verdun in 843. After the reform of the counties in East Francia , the Duchy of Swabia is then formed into 915 , then it extended Vosges in the west to Lech in the east and Chiavenna , today in Italy , in the south.

After long arguments with Welfens (Guelphs), the family of Hohenstaufen eventually becomes the most powerful in the duchy.

Under Emperor Frederick II of Hohenstaufen family lands, including the Duchy of Swabia then part, are attached directly to the imperial crown.

During the period of the interregnum of 1250 to 1273 the Swabian territories were not sovereign and thus were independent. When in 1273 Rudolph I. of Habsburg becomes king, he keeps many of the privileges of autonomy of Swabian cities and abbeys and formalized as a free empire. (The last male descendant in the direct line of Hohenstaufen, Corradino , died in 1268 .) The Duchy of Swabia ceases to exist politically and disintegrates into several counties and the cities and abbeys free, most of which existed until Recess Empire in 1803.

Today Swabia is defined by the language area of the Swabian straddles eastern Baden-Wrttemberg and western Bavaria.
