West Frisian is a talk group of languages West Germanic. It is spoken by about 400,000 people, mainly in the province Dutch in Friesland , where he has next to the Dutch language official status. Some see it as a language in its own right, others as the dominant variety of Frisian.
West Frisian, it is known simply as the Frisian (Frysk). In the Netherlands, the name West Frisian (en) (West-Fries in Dutch) is reserved for a dialect of Dutch spoken in the region of West Friesland, which itself depends on the province of North Holland.
Other varieties are the Frisian Eastern Frisian (2,000 speakers) and Frisian (10 000 speakers), both spoken in Germany. It also looks like the English and Dutch.
The majority of the population of the province of Friesland includes West Frisian, but due mainly to the Dutch school, literacy levels in West Frisian is relatively low.
