Westphalian (Language)

The Westphalian is a dialect of north-western Germany and is divided into four categories:

  • The flat Munsterlander
  • The East Westphalian
  • The flat sauerland
  • The Western Munsterlander

The Westphalian is distinguished by a different pronunciation of 'a' of diphthongs and the use of words such as own kern to sprechen (speaking) and Rue for Hund (dog). It still has many grammatical structures and old customs spoken. In terms of spelling, there is still no established standards and the writing is done using the phonetic characters. But there is a spelling defined area Ravensberg. A glossary of Westphalian is described in the dictionary of Westphalian (das Wrterbuch Westflischen) and Dictionary of Low Saxon (das Wrterbuch Niederschsischen).
