History

Daniel Alston , aka Fonzy, is one of the main initiators and promoters of this project. The project was opened on http://wiktionary.org Thursday 12 December 2002 , then moved to http://www.wiktionary.org on 26 December 2002. On 22 March 2004 , the French version was created http://fr.wiktionary.org.

Functions

It lists the words of any language in the form of an article by script, separated by paragraphs of languages, each containing etymology , phonetics , bending ( conjugation / declination ), a term derived / related , synonym / antonym , homonym (homograph / homophone ), hyponym / hypernym , meronymy / holonyme , paronymy and anagram.

In addition, the gadget dictionaryLookupHover allows quick access to double-clicks from sites like Foundation.

Popularity

According to the statistics web service Alexa , about five million pages are viewed every day on all sites wiktionary.org. Making it approximately the thousandth most visited site of the Internet , and one of the main sites in lexicography. Each visitor viewing an average of 2 pages.

French Version

In terms of attendance, the French version of the project represents 9.7% of traffic generated by wiktionary.org, against 48.6% for the English version, and 12.8% for version germanophone. As 7.5% of this traffic comes from France, much of the use of is from the rest of the Francophonie , and non-Francophone countries.

With the automatic insertion of several free dictionaries, the French version has grown very quickly in late 2005, and 2006. April 6, 2005, 4000 were approximately articles.
